Málaga
Picasso's home town: a city beach, a Moorish fortress and lively tapas lanes.
A sunny port city on the Costa del Sol where Picasso was born: a Moorish fortress and castle on the hill, a Roman theatre at their feet, a marble-paved old town full of tapas bars and a city beach a short walk away.

Staying and getting around
Good areas to stay
The old town. Marble streets, the cathedral, Picasso's museum and house, and tapas bars; lively and central.
Soho. The street-art district between the old town and the station, with several hostels and slightly lower prices.
Flying in
Málaga (AGP): Local train (Cercanías C1) to Málaga Centro, about 15 min, ≈ A$4. Every 20 minutes or so, stopping at María Zambrano on the way (check).
Flewaway's estimate for the usual budget way into Málaga; check times and fares before you fly.
Getting around
You can walk everywhere. A single ticket is ≈ A$2. The old town, the port and La Malagueta beach are all within walking distance. City buses (EMT) and two metro lines cover the rest; a bus saves the steep climb to Gibralfaro (check).
Tourist tax
No tourist tax in Málaga at the time of writing; the city has asked to bring one in (check).
Day trips
, about 1 h 30 min by bus or train. The Alhambra and the Albaicín (book the Alhambra first).
