What you'll see
A huge Gothic cathedral wrapped in green, pink and white marble, topped by the brick dome that still dominates every view of the city. Inside it's surprisingly bare, so look up at the painted Last Judgement under the dome.
A brief history
Building began in 1296 and took well over a century. The dome, engineered by Filippo Brunelleschi and finished in 1436, was a huge technical gamble. The ornate front is much newer, added in the 19th century.
