What you'll see
About 460 steps up between the inner and outer shells of the dome, past the frescoes inside it, to a terrace with the whole city at your feet.
A brief history
Brunelleschi built the dome without the usual wooden scaffolding underneath, using a double shell and herringbone brickwork. It was finished in 1436.
