What you'll see
A huge Venetian fortress on the hill above town, a maze of bastions and gateways with views over the roofs, the bay and Bourtzi. You can climb the long stone stairway from town or take a taxi up the road.
A brief history
The Venetians built it in just a few years in the early 1700s, then lost it to the Ottomans soon after. Theodoros Kolokotronis, a hero of the War of Independence, was later held prisoner here.
