What you'll see
A huge red-sandstone palace, part roofless ruin and part restored, on a terrace above the old town. Inside the ticket are a cellar with a wine barrel the size of a small house, a pharmacy museum, and a terrace looking down over the roofs and the river.
A brief history
It was the seat of the Electors Palatine, among the most powerful princes in the empire. French troops wrecked it in the 1680s and 90s and lightning finished the job in 1764; the romantic ruin later drew poets and painters, and tourists after them.
